To address the harassment, looting of property, and denial of work opportunities facing Ethiopian immigrants due to the ongoing "anti-foreigner" movement in South Africa, a high-level diplomatic delegation sent by the Ethiopian government has held discussions with South African authorities and reached a common understanding.
The results of the delegation’s discussions with representatives from South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the Border Management Authority, the South African Police Service, and the Department of Home Affairs are as follows:
Safety Guarantee for Citizens: The two sides agreed that all Ethiopians in South Africa—whether they have legal documents or not—must be guaranteed safety. The South African government will work to fulfill its responsibility to protect these individuals.
Rule of Law and Treatment: It was emphasized that no illegal act can be solved through illegal means. However, it was agreed that citizens without legal status should be treated according to South African law and the international agreements to which South Africa is a signatory.
Controlling Criminal Networks: Both sides agreed to take coordinated and decisive legal action against those involved in human trafficking and other crimes. It was clearly stated that anyone involved in criminal activities will not escape legal accountability.
