To address the harassment, looting of property, and denial of work opportunities facing Ethiopian immigrants due to the ongoing "anti-foreigner" movement in South Africa, a high-level diplomatic delegation sent by the Ethiopian government has held discussions with South African authorities and reached a common understanding.
The results of the delegation’s discussions with representatives from South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the Border Management Authority, the South African Police Service, and the Department of Home Affairs are as follows:
Safety Guarantee for Citizens: The two sides agreed that all Ethiopians in South Africa—whether they have legal documents or not—must be guaranteed safety. The South African government will work to fulfill its responsibility to protect these individuals.
Rule of Law and Treatment: It was emphasized that no illegal act can be solved through illegal means. However, it was agreed that citizens without legal status should be treated according to South African law and the international agreements to which South Africa is a signatory.
Controlling Criminal Networks: Both sides agreed to take coordinated and decisive legal action against those involved in human trafficking and other crimes. It was clearly stated that anyone involved in criminal activities will not escape legal accountability.
The Role of the Ethiopian Government: The Ethiopian government confirmed that it will provide the necessary cooperation and coordination through its embassy and other institutions to support the process.
Responsibilities and Mutual Benefit: It was stated that Ethiopians in South Africa must organize and coordinate better than ever, respect the country’s laws, and avoid criminal activities. Instead of operating individually, they were encouraged to pool their resources, grow into companies and larger investments, and work in both Ethiopia and South Africa to create mutual benefits.
In conclusion, the delegation emphasized that all Ethiopians should operate within the legal framework to protect their own interests and those of their country, aiming to create a stable living and working environment.
The discussions held by the delegation represent a major diplomatic success in ensuring the safety of Ethiopians in South Africa. Beyond strengthening the long-term relationship between the two countries, this agreement has created a strong legal framework to help resolve the humanitarian crisis facing the citizens.
However, the effectiveness of this agreement will be measured by the mutual commitment of both parties and the compliance of the citizens. By organizing within the legal framework, avoiding criminal activities, and participating together in investments both in their home country of Ethiopia and in South Africa, Ethiopians can go beyond permanently resolving these tensions and create an opportunity that provides lasting economic and social benefits for both nations.
