Response Issued Regarding Recent Spike in Onion Prices

Expectations are that onion prices will drop from their current levels in the near future.

The recent unexpected spike in onion prices within Addis Ababa and its surrounding areas has caused significant market instability and public concern.

Currently, the retail price of onions in the city ranges from 130 to 170 Birr per kilogram, while reports indicate prices reaching as high as 200 Birr in regions outside the capital.

This represents a more than two-fold increase compared to the price of 60 to 70 Birr per kilogram seen just months ago.

Onion traders and importers attribute the price hike primarily to a shortage in production.

They cite the conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted fuel supplies as a major factor affecting farmers.

Specifically farmers relying on irrigation have struggled to access fuel for water pumps and transport leading to reduced yields and crop losses.

Additionally, traders point to a shift in farming patterns due to low onion prices last year, many farmers guided by market information opted to plant wheat, tomatoes, and other crops instead of onions this season.

Other contributing factors identified by traders include seasonal crop diseases and a sharp rise in demand following the end of the fasting season particularly around the Easter holiday.

The Addis Ababa Trade Bureau rejects the traders' claims, asserting that sufficient supply is entering the city and that the price surge is artificial.

The Bureau characterizes the current market situation as economic sabotage by traders who are arbitrarily inflating prices under the guise of high transportation costs.

The Bureau reported that through recent operations, it has seized over 34 trucks loaded with produce and identified traders who were hoarding onions illegally.

To mitigate the impact on consumers, the Bureau is facilitating the sale of onions at government-selected market centers for 85 to 100 Birr per kilogram, significantly lower than the prices found in the open market.

Looking ahead, the Bureau has committed to strengthening regulatory oversight and curbing illegal price gouging expressing optimism that onion prices will decrease to their previous levels in the near future.

Overall, the surge in onion prices has become a point of contention highlighting both challenges in the supply chain and ongoing questions regarding market regulation and trader integrity.
