New procedure for taxis to begin at the end of June!

According to the Transport Bureau, in the month of May alone, administrative measures were taken against more than 3,300 drivers for charging above the tariff and failing to display the fare list.

According to information released by the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau, drivers who receive more than three reports against them will be suspended from providing services.

The Bureau announced that it will intensify its control over public transport drivers who charge more than the set tariff or operate outside of their assigned routes, stating that taxis receiving more than three complaints will be suspended.

To streamline enforcement and resolve disputes between traffic police, inspectors, and passengers caused by the previous distance-based (per kilometer) tariff, it was announced that a detailed list clearly showing the travel fare between origin and destination points will be posted on every vehicle by this coming June.

This measure was taken after a study confirmed that many drivers have been charging fares above the set rates, taking advantage of the official price adjustments caused by global fuel price fluctuations.

According to the Transport Bureau, in the month of May alone, administrative measures were taken against more than 3,300 drivers for charging above the tariff and failing to display the fare list.

Furthermore, following the resumption of the 9417 toll-free hotline—which had been interrupted due to infrastructure development—nearly 400 complaints were received last month, and action was taken on 300 of them.

It is recalled that the government implemented a transport tariff adjustment starting March 16, 2026, in connection with the conflict in the Middle East and disruptions in fuel supply.

However, citing the second retail fuel price increase implemented by the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration starting May 1, 2026, it is observed in various parts of the city that many drivers and conductors are arbitrarily increasing prices without the Bureau's authorization, leading to disputes and harassment of passengers.

Following this, the Bureau emphasized that the previous tariff adjustment already took into account potential future fuel price increases. It noted that while a study based on the current situation is underway, the existing tariff must remain in effect until the study is completed and an official directive is issued.

Stating that any price increase outside of the set tariff is illegal, the Bureau announced that it will strengthen coordinated operations between nearby traffic police and inspectors to ensure that the enforcement process fully protects passengers' rights.

It was also noted that this law enforcement role will not be limited to drivers; educational administrative penalties will also be imposed on transport associations and owners who have the responsibility of controlling their members and ensuring ethical conduct.

Residents of the city frequently lodge complaints regarding being forced to pay more than the legal tariff, overloading, passenger harassment, being dropped off suddenly in the middle of a journey, lack of professional conduct, driving without license plates, and thefts occurring on vehicles.
