A decade after capturing widespread attention with their pioneering fuel and lithium innovations, University of Gondar chemistry lecturer and researcher Abuhay Wubshet has provided an update on the current status of his soil-to-fuel conversion project.
In an interview with Amhara Media Corporation, the researcher detailed that the research initiative undertaken alongside fellow colleagues has successfully scaled up from micro-level laboratory experiments measured in milliliters to a production capacity of 30 to 40 liters.
He noted that the innovation has secured a patent right, and the Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise has certified that the product is suitable for vehicular use. Recalling past milestones, the researcher mentioned that the fuel was previously produced through the University of Gondar to power select vehicles.
He also highlighted that he and Professor Birhanu Andualem received recognition and an award from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) for their encouraging research breakthrough.
The primary raw material for this indigenous product is a type of soil known as "Dobe," found in the Simien Mountains. As previously reported, purified fuel is extracted by mixing this soil with water and subjecting it to varying temperature levels.
However, the researcher stated that this high-potential innovation has faced various hurdles preventing it from scaling up into a full-scale factory and mass production operation. Over the past two to three years, security challenges in moving across various areas to collect raw material samples have impeded progress.
Additionally, financial constraints have hindered comprehensive feasibility studies and efforts to verify adequate raw material availability.
The researcher further pointed out that while the University of Gondar has provided various forms of support, frequent administrative leadership changes within the institution have created procedural obstacles.
Despite the challenges in establishing a factory for mass production, Mr. Abuhay confirmed that the project has not been abandoned and laboratory-level work remains ongoing.
He also noted that significant results have been achieved in lithium mining, a critical resource for electric vehicles and future energy supply, alongside the biofuel.
Finally, the researcher issued a call to action, stating that if industry-adjacent investors, government bodies, and philanthropic organizations support them through research collaboration and financing, they are fully prepared to analyze raw material reserves and transition into full-scale production.
