Sudan Reportedly Deploys Additional Troops Near the Ethiopian Border

May 8, 2026 (Gebeya Media) — Sudan’s military has reportedly deployed additional troops and anti-aircraft defense systems near Ethiopia’s border, particularly in the Blue Nile region and the disputed Al-Fashaga area.

The military buildup comes just days after Sudan accused Ethiopia of serving as a launch point for drone attacks.

According to Bloomberg, the Sudanese army has been carrying out new military activities in the Blue Nile State, which borders Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz region.

Reports also indicate that after visiting the area, Sudanese military officials ordered heightened security measures.

In addition, Sudan Tribune reported that Sudanese forces have positioned more military equipment and troops at strategic locations in East Galabat, Basunda, and both Greater and Lesser Al-Fashaga areas in Gedaref State.

The military mobilization follows Sudan’s accusations that Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates were involved in the drone attack targeting Khartoum Airport.

Ethiopia has rejected the allegations as “baseless.” In a statement, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the accusations were inconsistent with the long-standing historical relationship between the two countries and could undermine ongoing peace efforts.

The ministry also accused certain Sudanese military factions of violating Ethiopia’s territorial integrity.

The disputed Al-Fashaga border region has long been a source of tension between the two countries, and concerns are growing that the latest military movements could further threaten regional stability and peace.
